New Cincom Smalltalk Screencasts
I mentioned Cincom’s videos a while back. In preparation for the newest release of VisualWorks (I would expect a release of ObjectStudio soon after), Jim Robertson has redone a lot of the older screencasts and added more besides.
If you are at all interested in Smalltalk, which is at or near the root of the whole object-oriented programming concept, you should take a look at these videos.
I am also waiting for the Squeak fork Pharo to get into the Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, or Mandriva repositories, so I can try it out. In the Linux world, most software is now installed, updated, and uninstalled through the distribution’s package manager. Hopefully, the Pharo guys will connect with GetDeb or Livna if the distros are unwilling to directly distribute compatible packages.

If you have spent time struggling through the antiquated tutorial for GST, head over to Canol Gökel for a link to this e-book.
Personally, I find Squeak’s interface, with all the colors and doodads, terribly confusing. GNU Smalltalk is GUI-less, which will hopefully enable me to learn the basic syntax of the language, which will help whether I am using GST, Squeak, or VisualWorks.

James Robertson has a screencast that shows an example of why we want to learn to use our available tools to automate repetitive tasks. Apparently, every few minutes, a spammer defaces a couple pages on a particular wiki. His solution is to script the automatic restoration at set intervals.
Question: In your environment, what repetitive tasks do you have to deal with? Is there a way to automate those tasks using tools which are allowed in your environment? (That is an important limitation. Carl Sassenrath, the creator of REBOL, has articulated his frustration with IT staffs that refuse to allow hand-crafted REBOL solutions to remain in their organizations. Incidentally, Carl, I would like to see someone doing a similar daily screencast for REBOL.)

I have said that anyone wanting to follow our family’s adventures with Squeak should buy the book. I have obtained the book for myself and two nephews, with one more to come.
Changing employment is slowing things down considerably, even given conflicting schedules (track, soccer, baseball, church youth group, work, and "taxi duty").

During preparation for an upgrade from Fedora Core 5 to Fedora Core 6, I lost all of my data on the older Dell laptop where I do much of my work. That includes Squeak, REBOL, REXX, and the progression through a couple of tutorials for each language. After two days of work, the laptop is back up, so I’ll be reinstalling and redoing the tutorials soon.
I talked a little about this over on Free & Open.
